I have created a repository of about 1200 VTT tokens that you guys can use for free. If you don’t want to read more, you can just go to this link and grab them: https://www.patreon.com/posts/54992126
I like them. During 2020, all of my D&D came to a shuddering, crashing halt. Then I got into VTTs, and I realized that I kind of love the ability to prep my stuff online in one place. I started with MapTool, moved onto Foundry. The trend has very much been for the community to release a ton of top-down tokens. I think this is because there are a lot of tools out there for creating portrait tokens on the fly. I… don’t like top-down tokens very much. They’re cool and novel in certain situations. For instance, I’ve been using them to dileniate between people and creatures the party doesn’t know. Portrait tokens are for people who’ve told you their name.
In general though, I’d rather just run games with all portrait tokens, but I also want my prep time to go other places than token creation. I can’t be the only one. Hence, this pack.
In the immediate future, I plan on trying to make a Foundry version of this that automatically finds your SRD (5e) or Bestiaryies (2e) and automatically asigns a face to relevent tokens.
I’d also like to make more tokens on a regular basis, but I don’t want to do it for free. I’m not sure this will look like. If a ton of people subscribe to the patreon, I could potentially justify just dedicating time every month to add more tokens to this pack.
Judging by other people’s patreons who produce similar content, that will never happen. This potentially means that, if there is interest in the tokens, I could have a paid version and a free version. This might look a few different ways. The paid version might just have more tokens. It might have advance tokens — so, everything gets added to the free version eventually, but the paid version gets new stuff first. Or, potentially, patrons could dictate the direction of future tokens.
I don’t want this to devolve into commissions, though. Zach detests commission work, one, and two — I dunno man, people who commission fantasy art work, more often than not, want some insane shit. Just insane, unusable-for-anyone-but-them-weird-indescribably-Lovecraftian shit. I put a few of these in the token pack because they’re occasionally good story prompts. Like, hey, btw, there’s a robotic duck in the background. But I can’t populate a token pack with this kind of insane creative energy if my goal is to supply people with nice art for their skeletons and fire elementals. So patrons’ dictating the direction would look something more like “Hey, what creature types do you wanna see?”
Another possibility is that we might just make some of our own adventures and, in doing so, add the tokens from them to this pack as we go. Then the paid content would be maps, statblocks, PDFS, and VTT scenes and the free content would be the creature art.
Let me know in the comments which one of these directions interests you, if any. Maybe you have a better idea and I’d love to see it.
I want to support this, but I don’t want to use Patreon
UPDATE :: 8-20-21
You can grab these on DriveThruRPG here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/368387/TC-VTT-Tokens-200Count-Six-Colors
That’s actually fine. I plan to toss this pack a few places as PWYW. I am trying to overhaul our own store, here, though, so that will be a bit. I’ll update this space and make a future post when this happens.
In Zach’s words, though:
So maybe I should just chill on that.
