Black Lives Matter and so does Black Art
I won’t make this long. The president just used racist codified language to declare war on Black Americans, protesting the right to not be killed by the police and to receive equality. I wish I could say that I was surprised, but I am not. It would always come to this someday.
Some may question why I am continuing with this Kickstarter. There is no simple answer. My heart aches. My spirit is tired, and to be frank, I am scared. My comic seems trivial in the face of these grave injustices, while people rise up around me, and the world watches… some with hate in their hearts.
But art and life are intertwined. I believe art matters and even more so Black art matters in all its forms. We need images of black superheroes, black love, black joy. Whether it’s drama, fantasy, horror. Whatever it is. Art creates communities, it can distract. It can revive. That’s what I hope to do with this comic.
The system takes so much, but it will not take this from me. Even if no one is paying attention.

My very existence should not be a fight. If you are silent on these things I can’t fuck with you anymore. You are complicit. You are arrogant. You are a damn coward.
If you are uncomfortable, good! Stay uncomfortable for those who are oppressed. Some of my white friends are afraid to rock the boat. I am afraid to lose a black brother or sister to a racist system. We are not the same.
Please for the love of God, educate yourself, learn, listen. You have two ears, and one mouth. Figure it out.
The Bone Herder
The Bone Herder takes place in the mythical country of Koatrom and is inspired by pre-colonial Africa and Afropunk aesthetics. Why Afropunk? It is a battle cry against the norm and a baseline for something different. It isn’t easily defined. Fantasy has been built on the shoulders of the Western ideals. While I enjoy it, it does have its issues, prejudices, and hurtful stereotypes.
This is why I am creating the world of The Bone Herder. It is for people, like me, that want to a reflection of themselves in the media they consume. My family tree and genealogy have no known origin. Africa is the framework for my existence and I feel an attachment and at times even a hole for a motherland I never knew. I imagine worlds and stories they might have once been a part of many, many years ago.
I based the world around ancient African cities like Carthage and Kush. The ancient cities of Africa are a rich and diverse world. I have created my own mythos surrounding the mysterious and ancient Flesh Folk.
While this story is a fantasy horror comic, I want to portray a strong and loving Black family. Cass’s family will come strongly into play and we will see the impact that they have on her personhood as the story progresses.
